Conflict situations often involve strong emotions, strong personalities, deep-seated beliefs and biases. Successful interventions require deep analysis and diagnosis of the conflict situation, a quick decision on the appropriate tools for engagement as well as effective execution the intervention. These skills are usually acquired by trial and error and take years of experience to develop. Participants will learn from the trenches how to become masterful in conflict situations by being able to identify which strategy is most effective at any given moment during the conflict resolution process.
In this highly interactive workshop, you will learn how the human brain in conflict and those experiencing strong emotion process information. Participants will learn to recognize and be able to work with the common patterns of emotion that may thwart resolution, impair constructive decision-making processes and collaboration.
You will develop a highly valuable skill set of tried and true techniques, including core messaging and affect labeling, that you can utilize when confronted with strong emotion.
In this workshop, attendees will learn:
- To learn and become proficient in the techniques of Core Messaging of Affect Labeling.
- To become masterful at redirecting strong emotions that will allow for engagement of the rational part of the brain in conflict situations.
- To identify your own internal reactions to high emotion and learn how they may be impairing your ability to identify the needs of the individuals in conflict.
- To develop an advanced skill set that will allow you to remain centered, poised, and in control during any high heat encounter.
- To understand and integrate scientific findings that support the tools and techniques learned in the workshop.
- Strategies for working with entrenched belief systems and be able to identify their impact on the conflict engagement process.
MCLE credits will be provided by the American Institute of Mediation.
Presenter Bio
Douglas E. Noll, JD, MA., core faculty member of the American Institute of Mediation. Mr. Noll, a nationally acclaimed speaker and trainer, is also a full time mediator, specializing in difficult, complex, and intractable conflicts. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators, a Fellow of the American College of Civil Trial Mediators, on the American Arbitration Association panel of mediators and arbitrators, and is certified under international standards established by the International Mediation Institute. He is the author of Elusive Peace: How Modern Diplomatic Strategies Could Better Resolve World Conflicts (Prometheus, 2011) Sex, Politics & Religion at the Office: The New Competitive Advantage (Auberry Press 2006), with John Boogaert, and Peacemaking: Practicing at the Intersection of Law and Human Conflict (Cascadia 2002).
Mr. Noll has been listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America since 2005 by US News & World Report and is a Northern California SuperLawyer. He serves as a faculty member of the Pepperdine School of Law Straus Institute Professional Skills Development Program. He is also adjunct professor of law at San Joaquin College of Law.
